Professor Vinciane Pirenne-Delforge new foreign member of the Academy

Professor Vinciane Pirenne-Delforge has been elected as foreign member of the historical-antiquarian class of The Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities at the Academy’s general meeting on 7 June 2022.

Vinciane Pirenne-Delforge was born in Liège in 1963 and defended her dissertation L’Aphrodite grec. Contribution à l’étude de ses cultes et de sa personnalité dans le panthéon archaïque et classique at the Université de Liège in 1992. Her research is on ancient Greek religion and since 2017 she holds the chair “Religion, histoire et société dans le monde grec antique” at the Collège de France in Paris.

Pirenne-Delforge has published extensively on Greek religion, focusing on ancient polytheism. Her research deals with e.g. how ancient antpolyteism was expressed in Greek cult as well as the ancient Greeks’ understanding of the divine.

Pirenne-Delforge is one of the founders of the scientific journal Kernos. Revue Internationale et pluridisciplinaire de religion grecque devoted to ancient Greek religion, and is currently the director of the journal.

Vitterhetsakademien’s members represent a range of disciplines drawn from the humanities, social sciences, religion, and law. Induction into Vitterhetsakademien is recognition of outstanding achievements in research in the humanities and social sciences and in cultural heritage management.

The Academy has sixty members divided into two ‘classes’, representing two groups of disciplines: history and the humanities (archaeology, aesthetics, ethnology, business administration, history, human geography, economics, religious studies, social anthropology, sociology, political science, etc.) and philosophy and philology (exegetics, languages, law, literature, philosophy, psychology, etc.). The Academy also has over sixty working members aged over 72 and several honorary members, foreign members, and corresponding members both Swedish and foreign. It has a total membership of about 200. Members are elected for life but can resign their membership by writing to the Board.

HM The King is the patron of The Academy, HM The Queen and HRH The Crown Princess are first honorary members.
